Session Content

The demand for safer, more sustainable and chemical-free decontamination processes is accelerating across the food industry. UV technologies offer new opportunities to control microorganisms while reducing chemical consumption and simplifying industrial processes.

However, “UV” does not refer to a single technology. Low-pressure UV-C, UV-C LEDs, medium-pressure UV, Excimer and pulsed light systems each provide different solutions depending on the application, microbial targets and process requirements.

This conference will introduce the scientific principles behind UV microbial inactivation and explain how parameters such as wavelength, dose and exposure conditions determine treatment efficiency. The specific challenges associated with bacteria, spores, yeasts and molds will be discussed, highlighting the importance of understanding microbial resistance mechanisms. A key focus will be placed on process validation and the role of biological indicators as reliable tools to assess UV performance under real industrial conditions.

The presentation will also explore the positioning of UV technologies compared with hydrogen peroxide-based solutions, discussing where UV can provide advantages in terms of speed, sustainability, residue-free processing and industrial integration.

By combining scientific fundamentals with practical industrial considerations, this conference will provide guidance on how to select the most suitable decontamination technology for future manufacturing processes.

Janyce Franc is Managing Director of STERIXENE SAS, a technical and training center specialized in UV and pulsed light technologies for microbial decontamination in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Through its expertise in UV technologies, process engineering and applied microbiology, STERIXENE supports industrial companies in the evaluation, validation and implementation of chemical-free decontamination solutions.

STERIXENE operates a microbiological laboratory dedicated to the study and validation of UV-based processes, with internationally recognized expertise in microbial resistance characterization, the development of UV biological indicators and the validation of decontamination technologies.

She is also President of EHEDG France, an organization promoting hygienic design principles and best practices to improve microbiological risk control in food and pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.
